WHATTON & ASLOCKTON II v ROTCC IV
1.30pm . Saturday 5 September 2009 . W & A Cricket Club
Conditions: Dull and cloudy; sunny spells
The final game of the season, another young team, and the ball seaming around on a bowler-friendly track. A prile of Mills, with Josh a late replacement for Joe.
W&A only had eight and chose to bat. They had scored 270 the week before and their batsmen were trying to dominate. Todd opened the bowling and `Yorked' their opener in his first over, followed by two maidens, and finished his spell with a wicket-maiden (their dangerous-looking captain for 14, with a ball that pitched on middle-and-leg and clipped off-stump). Craig opened from the other end, and got a wicket in his second over and his second in the seventh over. Jordan replaced Todd and finished with figures of 5.4-1-9-2. After 14 overs, they were 47 for 5 and it looked like an early finish, but their top-scorer was joined by a young Notts player. Nick had an over and was replaced by Lui, who had 2. Alex replaced him and got their top scorer out, LBW. Forty-seven for 5 somehow became 124 for 7: all 7 wickets were either bowled or LBW. We were confident, but still needed to put the runs on the board.
Alex and Ieuan opened and their shortage of fielders meant we started at five-an-over, despite losing Alex trying to pull one which was too close to him. Ross soon followed, LBW playing across a full ball. Ieuan was bowled by a ball which kept low. Nick joined Jordan at the crease: How do you play a ball from a left-hander which pitches on leg and goes on? Not with your pad, Nick - LBW! Thirty-six for 4 off 8 overs ... Mmmmm. Colby joined Jordy and the pair took the score into the 90s, including a straight 6. Colby was caught at silly mid-on for 23, and Dave joined Jordan. Jordy was caught, but we only needed 20, and Lui started with an off-drive for 2. Dave looked in good nick and finished, unbeaten, on 17, ably supported by Lui (7), and then Josh (on one leg!). Scores were level in the 27th over, and a wide finished it: a win and 19 points. Fourth place in the league assured.
Well played, boys, and special thanks to W&A for playing with eight. Thank you all for today and your efforts throughout the season. It was nice to have a scorer today - thanks, Alb!
Nick Mills, Captain
